Spiritual Bypass

Over the past few months , I've become fascinated with the ways in which we try to feel endlessly Good, we have involved ourself so skilfully in our approach by turning away from alcohol& drugs to alter our minds and turning towards things like self help books, Meditation, Yoga, Religious cults and meetings.

In someway we are now spiritually distracting ourself from our difficult feelings and emotions, thinking that we are on a spiritual journey, thus by immersing ourself in spiritual pursuits to escape our pain in Relationships, Life, or anything else that is difficult & challenging.

Advocating loudly to self and the world, by being self-righteous about the concept of Enlightenment",
we escape the multifaceted aspect of our reality as Human.

This experience is called "Spiritual Bypass", it is a defence mechanism which shields us from suffering emotions, and we are unable to see the bigger picture, its like finding peace outside rather than inside, and the difference is so subtle that one generally don't know we are doing it, it becomes a habit and develops a character with a false Facade', behind which there's a shattered face.

One day was sitting in a buddhism meeting at my friend's place, when i felt somehow amiss , something somewhere seems off-centred and unjustified, the dependency on escaping the reality and sitting in silence bothered a lot.

I discovered why i had always felt this way about certain spiritual practices, the very reason was that many practices falling under the guise' of "Spirituality"  are actually forms of escaping the reality and moving away from truth.

Spirituality is now used as a temporary 'Pain Killer" for which we became dependent, in order to bypass dark funk, it became our greatest hinderance by preventing us from developing true Courage, Authenticity and Completeness.

While Spirituality can protect us by providing a solid wall to hide behind, in doing so it also traps us in an "All Is Well & Good" jail compartment of Illusion.

Spirituality is not about wearing robes and chanting in dark, it is not always beautiful, in fact it is the most "Shattering & Tumultuous" experience one can go through in life

How About some Actual work, which takes feet on the ground from closed room silence meetings to :
  • Embodied awareness and clear Perspective.
  • Monitoring of Thoughts and self limiting Beliefs.
  • Ownership of all problems and resolving head-on.
  • Coherent choices and actions.
  • Observation of Behaviour and change for good.
  • Self-awareness & Responsibility.
Don't wear spiritualism as a Badge to beautify your Ego" πŸ›

  1. Spiritualism is to feel it and live in it

  2. Very well written Eddyee - we try to find our escape by following the different methods of spiritualism - without even realising the true essence of being spiritual- but the one who is truly on this path - will renunciate his ego first n foremost - which is the most difficult thing - he won't run away from the situations in life- instead face them with his wisdom n highest good for all in mind
